The Maple Leaf by Brendan William Cross

Wednesday, December 7th, 2011.

It has come to this.

The Prime Minister of Canada is in Washington, and I happen to believe he has sold us out. The Prime Minister is supplicating himself to the American President by signing into being a joint-policing deal which will see armed U.S. police welcome on Canadian soil. It goes against everything in my being. It goes against everything I have been brought up to believe. I believe in Canada, it is my home; it is my country. It is where my ancestors lived for a thousand years before us. It is the safest country in the world, by far, and it is the country I have loved since I was a boy.

And I, for one, will never recognize the authority of any outside force other than local law enforcement, federal RCMP, and the military of our nation. If I do not see the sign of the Maple Leaf present, I will not adhere to any demand or command put before me. Never will I look to the United States as an authority on anything. Especially over Canada. I still believe in God keeping our land glorious and free and I can see that the time has come for all true Canadians to seek the will of God as the authority over our politics. And erasing an historic border that has served us for well over one hundred years is simply intolerable.

I believe in an invisible border around Canada that has blessed us into prosperity and protected us from outside influences for a long, long time. And this border of which I speak is spiritual. As a young country we have found our way, we have superceded the United States economically though the past decade, and our expertise in all fields is recognized around the globe. In a world where countries are being invaded and people are being destroyed, Canada must stand back for a moment and consider just who we are and who we want to be in the coming year. Are we different from the Americans, or are we the opposite of the Americans?

This past summer I had a dream where I looked in my wallet and found three bills. One was Mexican and it was tattered and torn, pieced together with tape. The second was American and it was old and tired and crumpled from years of use. The third was a Canadian bill that was in pristine condition. This led me to believe at the time that any proposed North American Union would be a union of Canadian dominance if it ever came to pass. And I will stand by that. True Canadians know who true Canadians are. We see it in eachother's eyes and by the way we serve our country even in the smallest things when the smallest things are the things we have been called to do.

The time might be coming where we will be called to do, quite simply, the smallest things to stand up to the influence of our American counterpart, wherever it might manifest itself or appear before us. And I am not talking about protesting in the streets or living in a tent in the winter in a park downtown. That is the American way and it has brought just cause for the policing forces to force their will upon the public. What I am talking about is, once again, spiritual. I just want to do God's will, and He has allowed me at times to be in the presence of National Chiefs, Premiers, Prime Ministers, and Canadian Royalty, and I believe that face-to-face engagement with our government officials is the only way to be heard person-to-person. These are people who still walk down city streets and are open to a kind wave from time to time.

In fact, a kind wave is the Canadian way. It even appears somewhat to look like the sign of the maple leaf. That is what we need more of these days. It is a sign of trust and a quick message of greeting. Its origin lies in demonstrating to oncomers that you are unarmed in your dominant hand. And after our Prime Minister signs Mr. Obama's paper in the White House on December 7th, the sign of the maple leaf will be one of the last remaining positive identifiers of our solidarity as Canadians- the maple leaf which I pray will always be evident on flag poles, military insignias, and official seals.

Our borders are not made to be broken. They were created within God's will and will remain within His will. And my prayer always for you is that you seek His will, too.

The time has come for us, Canada, to return to our roots. To the way of Baptist preacher Tommy Douglas' strong voice, even when he was outside of Parliament. Only after walking through the darkest valley can you ever know how magnificent it is to be on the highest mountain. Moses went to Pharoah ten times, I repeat, TEN times, to tell him to let His people be free. This is what the Lord God commanded him to do. And the end of the story is the exodus from Egypt. I recently had a dream where peoples' debts were being bought by either a government, corporation, or institution, and I immediately turned to the person in my dream and exclaimed, "But they're being bought into slavery!" I hope it does not ever come to that.

But it has come to this.
